Ben Locke is a former Division-I soccer player turned author, advocate, & survivor.

Ben published his first book with HarperCollins in 2024 titled In Our Suffering, Lord Be Near, which documents his journaling process as he walked through the sudden end of his athletic career, a life-altering chronic disease diagnosis, and came forward about the sexual abuse he experienced in the early years of his college soccer career.

Having shared openly and honestly about his darkest experiences in his book, Ben now authors a weekly journal for those sojourning through difficult times, leads creative writing workshops for trauma survivors, and seeks opportunities to share how his greatest crises helped form his hope and identity in Christ.

After moving out of the house at 16, Ben received a scholarship to play soccer at his dream university. Over the next five years, he underwent three major surgeries and transferred schools until a car accident altered his life forever. A number of months later after a trip to the ER, he was forced to abandon his hopes of playing professional soccer. Ben spent the next three years on bedrest, making a second home out of hospitals, doctors offices, and imaging centers after receiving a diagnosis for a chronic autoimmune disease.

Due to his physical and mental restrictions, he desperately dove headfirst into writing as a means of escape, expression, and wrestling with his identity. Without any agenda, he bought his first notebook and began journaling his deepest questions, emotional turmoil, prayers, and meditations with pen and paper, often hunched over the side of his bed because of his illness. This undertaking also forced him to process the sexual abuse he experienced as an athlete and its impact on his mind, body, and soul.

Through a series of unexpected events, this journal became a manuscript that led to the release of his debut book, In Our Suffering, Lord Be Near. Now, through his book and weekly newsletter community, Ben seeks to encourage the often-silenced voices of the sick, lonely, and hopeless through honest writing, raw emotions, and personal vulnerability.

Ben’s unexpected discovery of the profound grace of God, combined with his intense experiences of pain and suffering, motivate him to bring light to life’s darkest moments through storytelling.

He is also the creator of Still, a weekly journal and creative community that wrestles with life’s greatest hardships and questions through creative prompts, vulnerable devotionals, and earnest prayer. Still invites readers to slow down in the midst of a chaotic world, open themselves up to honest meditation, and find rest in the presence of an all-knowing God — not by avoiding hard things, but by leaning in and finding true hope.

His story and writing has appeared in The Bible App, The Washington Times, Moody Radio, and ESPN, among others, and is currently working on his next book.
